How to lace work boots with hooks. While the heel lock lacing method may be familiar to experienced runners, I would say most people have no idea what it is all about, let alone how to try a heel lock (lace lock).
This visual guide will show you step-by-step how I lace up my heeled boots so you can take full advantage of this trusted and underrated shoe and boot lacing method.
Although this demo includes a pair of work boots (Thorogood USA) with speed hooks, the heel lock lacing technique can be achieved without them.
What Is Heel Lock Lacing?
Heel lock lacing is a method of lacing shoes that (as the name implies) holds the heel in place to prevent the heel from slipping, so your toes don't get caught on the front of the boot or shoe.
It's the best shoelacing method I know of for avoiding annoying blisters and the dreaded purple or black toenails. In addition, it is an ideal binding method for activities such as running or walking.
Why Use Heel Lock Laces?
Runners already know the advantages of heel lock laces. A heel lock socket is super easy to realize and the benefits are enormous.
The 3 main advantages:
- Helps prevent heel slippage by locking the heel and foot in place
- Tie a super tight knot with a secure finish.
- Provides extra rear foot stability and toe room
How To Heel Lock Lace Your Boots (Or Shoes)
Here I have provided 4 quick and easy steps to achieve heel lock. I've also provided gifs with each step to help those who prefer visual learning.
Step 1:
You first cross the laces as usual until you reach the 2-speed end hooks on each side. Start by snapping the cord onto both carabiners on the desired side, then cross the cord over to the other side.
Step 2:
Then slide the laces up on both speed hooks on the opposite side, over the lace you crossed in the previous step.
Step 3:
Third, where the magic happens. You take the lace you just tied and cross it over to the other side, slide it under the vertical lace and pull it to the end. It should resemble a frog's face.
Phase 4:
Finally it's time to put the finishing touches and tie them off! You can now lace up your shoes as usual,
but if the laces are long enough I like to wrap my laces around the back of the boots and then finish the knot.
I think it looks great and gives a little more support above the ankle. Hello!
